About the Friction Force Calculator

Friction opposes the relative motion of surfaces in contact. Its magnitude equals the coefficient of friction (μ) times the normal force (N) pressing the surfaces together.

The formula explained

Tips and common mistakes

  • Make sure you use the normal force, not the weight, unless they are the same in your situation.
  • If the coefficient is very small, the friction force will also be small, because friction is directly proportional to \(\mu\) and \(N\).
