What is force?

The formula explained

Tips and common mistakes

  • Do not mix units, because mass should be in \(\text{kg}\) and acceleration in \(\text{m/s}^2\).
  • If the acceleration is \(0\), the force is \(0\,\text{N}\), even when the object has mass.

What is the difference between mass and weight?+

Mass is how much matter an object contains and never changes. Weight is the force of gravity on that mass, so it changes with location. Weight is actually a force, found by multiplying mass by gravity.

What is a newton?+

It is the unit of force, defined as the force that accelerates one kilogram at one metre per second squared. For a sense of scale, holding a small apple takes roughly one newton.

Can I rearrange the formula to find mass or acceleration?+

Yes. Since F = ma, you can find mass with m = F ÷ a, or acceleration with a = F ÷ m. The same relationship works in all three directions.
