What is density?

Density tells you how much mass is packed into a given volume. It is what makes a small lump of lead feel heavy while a large piece of foam feels light. You find it by dividing an object's mass by its volume.

Why do some things float and others sink?+

An object floats if it is less dense than the fluid around it and sinks if it is denser. A steel ship floats because its overall density, counting all the air inside, is lower than water.

What are common units of density?+

Kilograms per cubic metre is the standard SI unit, but grams per cubic centimetre is common in the lab. Conveniently, water is 1 g/cm³, which makes comparisons easy.

How do I find mass or volume from density?+

Rearrange the formula. Mass is density times volume, and volume is mass divided by density. So if you know any two of the three, you can find the third.
