T-Test Calculator
Perform a one-sample t-test.
About T-Test Calculator
The t-test determines if a sample mean is significantly different from a hypothesized population mean.
$$t = \frac{\bar{x} - \mu_0}{s / \sqrt{n}}$$
How to use this calculator
- Enter the sample mean, sample standard deviation, and sample size.
- Type the null hypothesis mean, \(\mu_0\).
- Choose the type of test, left-tailed, right-tailed, or two-tailed, if the calculator asks for it.
- Click calculate to get the t statistic, and use it to judge how far your sample mean is from \(\mu_0\).
The formula explained
The formula computes the t statistic, which measures how many estimated standard errors the sample mean is away from the hypothesized mean. A larger absolute value of \(t\) means stronger evidence against the null hypothesis.
- \(\bar{x}\) = sample mean
- \(\mu_0\) = hypothesized population mean under the null hypothesis
- \(s\) = sample standard deviation
- \(n\) = sample size
- \(t\) = test statistic
Step by step method
- Find the difference between the sample mean and the hypothesized mean, \(\bar{x} - \mu_0\).
- Compute the standard error, \(s / \sqrt{n}\).
- Divide the difference by the standard error to get the t statistic.
Worked example
Problem. A teacher claims the average test score is 72. A sample of 16 students has a mean score of 75 and a standard deviation of 8. Find the one-sample t statistic.
- Substitute into the formula, \(t = \frac{75 - 72}{8 / \sqrt{16}}\).
- Compute the standard error, \(8 / \sqrt{16} = 8 / 4 = 2\), then the numerator, \(75 - 72 = 3\).
- Divide, \(t = 3 / 2 = 1.5\).
Answer. \(t = 1.5\)
Tips and common mistakes
- Use the sample standard deviation, not the population standard deviation, for a one-sample t-test.
- If your sample size is small, the t distribution is especially important because it accounts for extra uncertainty.
Frequently asked questions
How do I use a one-sample t-test calculator?+
Enter your sample mean, hypothesized population mean, sample standard deviation, and sample size. The calculator uses those values in the one-sample t-test formula to find the t statistic and, depending on the tool, the p-value or test result.
What does the one-sample t-test formula mean?+
The formula t = (x̄ - μ0) / (s / √n) compares your sample mean to the claimed population mean in units of standard error. A larger absolute t value means your sample mean is farther from the claim relative to the sample variation and sample size.
When should I use a t-test instead of a z-test?+
Use a one-sample t-test when the population standard deviation is unknown and you are using the sample standard deviation instead. A z-test is more appropriate only when the population standard deviation is known, which is less common in practice.
What happens if my sample size is small?+
A one-sample t-test is designed for small samples, but it works best when the data are roughly normal and there are no extreme outliers. With very small n, the result can be sensitive to unusual values, so it helps to check the data first.
How do I interpret the t value from a worked example?+
If the calculator gives a positive t value, your sample mean is above the hypothesized mean, and if it is negative, your sample mean is below it. The farther the t value is from 0, the stronger the evidence against the null hypothesis that μ = μ0.
