About Currency Exchange Calculator

Exchange rates fluctuate constantly. Banks and services add markup. Use mid-market rate for fair comparison.

$$amount_{to} = amount_{from} \times rate$$

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the amount you want to convert in the starting currency.
  2. Type in the exchange rate, which tells you how many units of the target currency equal one unit of the source currency.
  3. Check the converted amount shown by the calculator.
  4. If needed, reverse the conversion by swapping the currencies and using the inverse rate.

The formula explained

The formula \(amount_{to} = amount_{from} \\times rate\) computes the converted amount in the target currency. It multiplies the original amount by the exchange rate to find its value in the new currency.

  • \(\text{amount}_{from}\) = the amount of money you start with
  • \(\text{amount}_{to}\) = the amount of money after conversion
  • \(\text{rate}\) = the exchange rate used for the conversion

Step by step method

  1. Write down the starting amount and the exchange rate.
  2. Multiply \(amount_{from}\) by \(rate\) to get \(amount_{to}\).
  3. Check the units to make sure the result is in the target currency.

Worked example

Problem. Convert \(50\) US dollars to euros using an exchange rate of \(0.92\) euros per dollar.

  1. Start with \(amount_{from} = 50\) and \(rate = 0.92\).
  2. Compute \(amount_{to} = 50 \\times 0.92 = 46\).
  3. The converted amount is \(46\) euros.

Answer. \(46\) euros

Tips and common mistakes

  • Make sure the exchange rate matches the direction of conversion, from source currency to target currency.
  • Watch for fees or rounding, since real exchange services may give a slightly different final amount.

Frequently asked questions

How do I use the currency exchange calculator?+

Enter the amount you want to convert, then choose the exchange rate from the source currency to the target currency. The calculator applies amount_to = amount_from × rate to show the converted amount.

What does the exchange rate formula mean?+

The formula means you multiply the starting amount by the exchange rate to get the value in the other currency. For example, if 100 USD is converted at a rate of 0.92 EUR per USD, the result is 92 EUR.

Does the calculator include fees or commissions?+

No, it only calculates the pure currency conversion using the rate you enter. If a bank or exchange service charges fees, you need to add those separately.

What happens if I enter a zero or very small amount?+

A zero amount always converts to zero, because anything multiplied by zero is zero. Very small amounts will also convert correctly, although the displayed result may be rounded depending on the calculator settings.

How is this different from converting with a reciprocal rate?+

This calculator uses the rate in the direction you enter it, from amount_from currency to amount_to currency. If you have the reverse rate, you must convert it first, because the formula requires the direct multiplier for the chosen direction.
