The formula explained

The basic commission formula computes the commission amount from a sale amount and a rate. If the rate is a percent, first change it to a decimal, then multiply by the sale amount.

• C = commission earned
• S = total sale amount
• r = commission rate as a decimal
• p = commission rate as a percent

Step by step method

1. Convert the percent rate to a decimal by dividing by \(100\).
2. Multiply the sale amount by the decimal rate using \(C = S \times r\).
3. If there is base pay, add it to the commission to get total earnings.

Worked example

Problem. A salesperson sells \(\$4{,}500\) worth of products and earns a \(6\%\) commission. How much commission is earned?

1. Convert \(6\%\) to a decimal: \(r = 6 \div 100 = 0.06\).
2. Multiply the sale amount by the rate: \(C = 4{,}500 \times 0.06\).
3. Compute the result: \(C = 270\).

Tips and common mistakes

• Make sure the percent is converted to a decimal before multiplying, because \(6\%\) is not \(6\).
• If the problem includes a base salary, do not forget to add it after finding the commission.
