The formula explained

• \(\text{unit price}\) = price for one unit of the product
• \(\text{total price}\) = the full cost paid
• \(\text{quantity}\) = the number of units, such as ounces, liters, pounds, or items

Step by step method

1. Write down the product's total cost and its amount, such as 12 ounces or 2 liters.
2. Divide the total price by the quantity to find the cost per one unit.
3. Use the same unit type when comparing different products.
4. Pick the option with the lower unit price if the amounts and units are comparable.

Worked example

Suppose you want to compare two bags of rice to see which is cheaper per pound.

1. Bag A costs \(\$9\) for \(3\) pounds. Compute \(9 \div 3 = 3\), so the unit price is \(\$3\) per pound.
2. Bag B costs \(\$14\) for \(5\) pounds. Compute \(14 \div 5 = 2.8\), so the unit price is \(\$2.80\) per pound.

• Make sure you compare the same unit, such as per ounce, per pound, or per liter.
• If a package has a different size, use unit price instead of total price to compare fairly.
