About the Grade Calculator

Calculates an overall course grade from several assessments, each with a score and a weight (percentage). The weights should add up to 100%.

How to use

Enter scores and weights as 'score, weight' pairs on separate lines, then click Calculate.

Worked example

90,40 and 80,60 → weighted grade 84%.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter each assessment score.
  2. Enter the matching weight for each assessment.
  3. Check that the weights are entered in the same units or proportion used by the course.
  4. Calculate the weighted average to get the final course grade.

The formula explained

$$ \text{grade} = \frac{\sum (\text{score} \cdot \text{weight})}{\sum \text{weights}} $$

  • \(\text{grade}\) = the final weighted course grade
  • \(\text{score}\) = the score earned on an assessment
  • \(\text{weight}\) = the importance assigned to that assessment
  • \(\sum\) = sum of all assessments

Step by step method

  1. List every graded item in the course, such as quizzes, homework, exams, and projects.
  2. Match each item with its score and its weight.
  3. Multiply each score by its weight, then add those results together.
  4. Add all of the weights, then divide the weighted total by the weight total.

Worked example

Suppose a student has three assessments and wants to find the course grade from their weighted scores.

  1. Use scores and weights of 85 with weight 20, 92 with weight 30, and 78 with weight 50.
  2. Compute the weighted total: \(85 \times 20 = 1700\), \(92 \times 30 = 2760\), and \(78 \times 50 = 3900\).
  3. Add the weighted totals to get 8360, and add the weights to get 100.
  4. Divide 8360 by 100 to get 83.6.

Answer. The weighted course grade is 83.6.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Make sure the score and weight for each item are matched correctly.
  • If your weights are percentages, confirm they add up to the intended total.
  • Do not average the scores first unless all weights are equal.
  • Check whether your course includes dropped grades or extra credit, since those can change the result.

Frequently asked questions

How do I enter items?+

One per line as score, weight, for example 88,30.

What if weights don't total 100?+

The tool normalizes by the total weight you entered.
