About the Flight Time Calculator

Estimates flight time from the route distance and a typical jet cruise speed, adding a fixed allowance for taxi, climb and descent.

How to use

Enter the distance in km and cruise speed, then click Calculate.

Worked example

5,500 km at 900 km/h → about 6 h 6 m plus ~30 min ground time.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the flight distance.
  2. Enter the cruise speed in the same distance and time units used by the calculator.
  3. Calculate the result to get the estimated flight duration.

The formula explained

$$ \text{time} = \frac{\text{distance}}{\text{speed}} $$

  • \(\text{time}\) = estimated flight duration
  • \(\text{distance}\) = trip distance to be flown
  • \(\text{speed}\) = cruise speed of the aircraft

Step by step method

  1. Start with the distance between departure and arrival points.
  2. Use the aircraft's cruise speed, not takeoff or landing speed.
  3. Divide distance by speed to estimate how long the flight takes.
  4. Read the result as the expected flight time.

Worked example

Suppose a flight covers 1,200 miles and the aircraft cruises at 480 miles per hour.

  1. Use the formula \(\text{time} = \frac{\text{distance}}{\text{speed}}\).
  2. Substitute the values: \(\text{time} = \frac{1200}{480}\).
  3. Compute the division: \(1200 \div 480 = 2.5\).

Answer. Estimated flight time is 2.5 hours, or 2 hours 30 minutes.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Use cruise speed, since it is the best estimate for steady flight.
  • Keep units consistent, such as miles and miles per hour or kilometers and kilometers per hour.
  • The result is an estimate, not an exact schedule, because winds and routing can change the actual time.
  • Do not mix different units, such as miles with kilometers per hour.

Frequently asked questions

Why add extra time?+

Taxi, takeoff, climb, descent and landing add roughly 30 minutes beyond cruise.

What is typical cruise speed?+

Airliners cruise around 850 to 920 km/h.
