The formula explained

$$ \text{yearly\_time} = 2 \times \text{distance\_one\_way} \times \text{workdays} \div \text{speed}, \quad \text{yearly\_fuel\_cost} = 2 \times \text{distance\_one\_way} \times \text{workdays} \div \text{mpg} \times \text{fuel\_price} $$

  • \(yearly_time\) = total commuting time for the year, usually in hours
  • \(yearly_fuel_cost\) = total fuel cost for commuting over the year
  • \(distance_one_way\) = one-way commute distance
  • \(\text{workdays}\) = number of commuting days in the year
  • \(\text{speed}\) = average commuting speed
  • \(\text{mpg}\) = vehicle fuel economy in miles per gallon
  • \(fuel_price\) = price of fuel per gallon

Step by step method

  1. Double the one-way distance to get the round-trip distance for a single commute day.
  2. Multiply by the number of commute days to get total annual commuting miles.
  3. Divide annual miles by average speed to estimate yearly commute time, and divide annual miles by mpg then multiply by fuel price to estimate fuel cost.
  4. Review the results and adjust the inputs if your commute changes during the year.

Worked example

Suppose you drive 18 miles one way, commute 240 days per year, average 30 miles per hour, get 25 miles per gallon, and pay 3.80 dollars per gallon.

  1. Round-trip distance per day is \(2 \times 18 = 36\) miles, so annual commuting distance is \(36 \times 240 = 8640\) miles.
  2. Yearly commute time is \(8640 \div 30 = 288\) hours.
  3. Yearly fuel use is \(8640 \div 25 = 345.6\) gallons, and fuel cost is \(345.6 \times 3.80 = 1312.48\) dollars.

Answer. Yearly commute time is 288 hours, and yearly fuel cost is 1312.48 dollars.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Use your true one-way distance, not round-trip distance, unless the calculator clearly asks for round-trip.
  • Make sure speed and mpg are realistic averages for your actual commute, including traffic and stop-and-go driving.
  • If you commute fewer than 5 days a week or work from home sometimes, lower the annual day count.
  • Fuel cost estimates depend heavily on fuel price, so update that input when prices change.
