About the Cocktail Ratio Scaler

Scales a cocktail's spirit, sweet and sour parts up to the number of servings you need, using a chosen part size in millilitres.

How to use

Enter the parts for spirit, sweet and sour, the ml per part, and servings, then click Calculate.

Worked example

A 2:1:1 sour at 30 ml/part for 4 servings → 240 ml spirit, 120 ml each.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter the original cocktail recipe and note how many servings it makes.
  2. Choose the number of servings you want the recipe to make.
  3. Multiply each ingredient by the same scaling factor.
  4. Round the result in a practical way for measuring and serving.

The formula explained

$$ \text{scaled amount} = \text{original amount} \times \frac{\text{desired servings}}{\text{original servings}} $$

  • \(\text{scaled amount}\) = the ingredient amount after resizing the recipe
  • \(\text{original amount}\) = the ingredient amount in the starting recipe
  • \(\text{desired servings}\) = the number of servings you want
  • \(\text{original servings}\) = the number of servings the original recipe makes

Step by step method

  1. Find the scaling factor by dividing the desired servings by the original servings.
  2. Multiply every ingredient amount in the recipe by that factor.
  3. Check the new amounts for reasonable measuring, especially for small quantities.
  4. Use the scaled recipe to mix the cocktail in the new batch size.

Worked example

Suppose a margarita recipe makes 2 servings, and you want enough for 6 servings.

  1. Compute the scaling factor: \(6 \div 2 = 3\).
  2. If the recipe uses 2 ounces of tequila per serving batch, scale it to \(2 \times 3 = 6\) ounces.
  3. If it uses 1 ounce of lime juice, scale it to \(1 \times 3 = 3\) ounces.

Answer. The recipe should be tripled to make 6 servings.

Tips and common mistakes

  • Scale every ingredient by the same factor so the drink stays balanced.
  • Double check whether the recipe lists total batch amounts or amounts per serving.
  • For very small measurements, round carefully so the flavor does not drift too much.
  • If you change ice, garnish, or dilution, keep in mind that those may not scale exactly the same way.
