Gravel Calculator
Calculate gravel volume and weight for an area.
About the Gravel Calculator
Calculates the volume and approximate weight of gravel needed to cover an area to a chosen depth.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the length and width of the area you want to cover, using the same unit for both measurements.
- Enter the depth of the gravel layer, usually in inches, feet, or meters.
- Choose the unit you want for the result, such as cubic feet, cubic yards, or tons if weight is included.
- Check the result and add a little extra for settling, spills, or uneven ground.
The formula explained
The basic formula finds volume by multiplying the area by the depth, so it tells you how much space the gravel will fill. If the calculator also gives weight, it converts that volume into mass using the gravel density.
- L = length of the area
- W = width of the area
- D = depth of the gravel layer
- V = volume of gravel needed
- d = density of the gravel, used to convert volume to weight
Step by step method
- Measure the length and width of the space, then multiply them to get area in square units.
- Multiply the area by the gravel depth to get volume in cubic units.
- If needed, convert the volume to the unit you want, then use the gravel density to estimate weight.
Worked example
Problem. You want to cover a driveway that is 12 meters long and 3 meters wide with gravel to a depth of 0.1 meters. How much gravel do you need?
- Find the area: 12 \imes 3 = 36 m^2.
- Multiply by the depth: 36 \imes 0.1 = 3.6 m^3.
- So the gravel volume needed is 3.6 m^3.
Answer. 3.6 m^3 of gravel
Tips and common mistakes
- Make sure all measurements use the same unit before calculating, because mixed units can give the wrong result.
- For real projects, order a little extra gravel, often about 5\% to 10\%, to cover settling and uneven surfaces.
Frequently asked questions
How heavy is gravel?+
Around 1.5 to 1.7 tonnes per m³ depending on type and moisture.
Should I order extra?+
Yes, add ~10% for compaction and spread.
