The formula explained
The basic idea is to divide the wall length by the stud spacing, then round up to a whole stud because you cannot buy part of a stud. Many layouts also add extra studs for the first and last positions, so the final count is often \(\\lceil \\frac{L}{s} \\rceil + 1\) or a similar variation depending on the wall details.

Worked example
Problem. A wall is \(20\) feet long and studs are spaced \(16\) inches on center. How many studs are needed?
- Convert \(20\) feet to inches: \(20 \\times 12 = 240\) inches.
- Divide by the spacing: \(240 \\div 16 = 15\).
- Since framing includes the end positions, the wall needs \(15 + 1 = 16\) studs.
