About the Bill of Materials Cost Calculator

Totals a bill of materials (BOM) from line items entered as 'quantity, unit price' pairs, with an optional overhead markup.

How to use this calculator

  1. Enter each line item with its unit cost and quantity.
  2. If needed, include any line item totals such as labor, fees, or tax.
  3. Review the calculator's summed total for the full bill of materials.
  4. Use the result to plan purchasing or to compare different material options.

The formula explained

The calculator finds the total cost by multiplying each item's unit cost by its quantity, then adding all the item totals together. If there are extra charges like tax or fees, those are added at the end.

  • n = the number of line items
  • \(\text{unit cost}_i\) = the cost of one unit of the \(i\)th item
  • \(\text{quantity}_i\) = how many units of the \(i\)th item you need
  • \(\text{total}\) = the final bill of materials cost

Step by step method

  1. For each line item, multiply \(\text{unit cost}_i\) by \(\text{quantity}_i\) to get that item's cost.
  2. Add all of the item costs together.
  3. Add any extra charges, such as tax or fees, if they are part of the bill.
  4. Check the final total against your budget or estimate.

Worked example

Problem. A project needs \(12\) screws at \(\$0.15\) each, \(3\) boards at \(\$8.50\) each, and \(2\) brackets at \(\$4.25\) each. Find the total bill of materials cost.

  1. Screws cost \(12 \times \$0.15 = \$1.80\). Boards cost \(3 \times \$8.50 = \$25.50\). Brackets cost \(2 \times \$4.25 = \$8.50\).
  2. Add the line totals: \(\$1.80 + \$25.50 + \$8.50 = \$35.80\).
  3. The total bill of materials cost is \(\$35.80\).

Answer. \(\$35.80\)

Tips and common mistakes

  • Make sure the quantity and unit cost are matched correctly, because a small mix-up can change the total a lot.
  • If your calculator does not include tax automatically, add it after summing the line items so your estimate stays accurate.
